The Starship Roles
One of the things we are asked about the most at Lion’s Gate is our controls. So for July’s newsletter, we’re talking about the controls we use and the roles you can expect to see on your mission!
The Program
For most flights we run, we use the simulator software created by Dream Flight Adventures. These controls feature a fully navigable 3D environment with a front view of the ship in said environment. This means crews can watch weapons fire, ships move around in the distance, and navigate between planets without the need for course calculation. Dream Flight controls are designed to foster team work, with each station helping or requiring another system in order to function, while allowing each position the opportunity to shine!
The Positions
Captain
The Captain of the ship does not generally control a station, instead utilizing the main viewscreen to gather information and make decisions on how best to proceed. All great Captains are familiar with the basics of the stations so they can sub in should an officer be stunned or otherwise predisposed.
Pilot
The Pilot flies the ship, navigating the depths of space with a mechanical joystick next to there station. Whether they are flying through asteroid fields or dodging enemy weapons, the Pilot is a high-intensity position.
XO/Tactical
In addition to internal security, the First Officer runs the Tactical Station. This makes them responsible for the ship’s Shields to protect against weaponry and other damage, and Stealth Field, used for sneaking past enemy vessels.
Engineers
The Engineers are in charge of repairing damage sustained to the ship over the course of the mission. The Apollo/Artemis can have as many as 3 Engineers at one time, so don’t crash or else they may get on your case.
Weapon Spec.
Our vessels are equipped with a large weapons arsenal, allowing for the entire crew to participate in combat. It is the job of the Weapons Officers (Up to 3) to coordinate and load the best weapons for every situation.
Medical
The ship’s Surgeon is in charge of keeping the crew healthy. The latest in medical technology allows examination and treatment be done with a singular device called the Surgiscope, a medium sized tablet with a built in scanner, allowing the Surgeon to meet patients where they are.
Physicist
The Physicist is a new role on the ship. This role spends time building up power for a “Super Charge”. The Physicist can then use the Super Charge to overcharge individual systems, allowing for faster weapon firing, stronger shields, and other powerful options in short bursts.
Science OFficers
The Science Officers are in charge of creating parts used throughout the ship. This includes stealth pods for Tactical, boosters for Pilot, repair drones for the Engineers and more. With larger crews, 2 Officers serve the role together.
Recon
The Recon Officer are the eyes and ears of the ship. While the viewscreen allows for long range surveillance, it is the role of the Recon Officer to know what’s nearby, where it’s going, and what sorts of weapons are most effective against it.
Computer Scientist
While the future has solved many problems, computer bugs are still around, and can spread rather quickly if left unchecked. That’s where the Computer Scientist comes in. They maintain the computer systems to ensure the ship can run effectively.
Quartermaster
Starships have to keep a massive supply of cargo in order to function. With this massive stockpile comes a bit of risk. The Quartermaster is in charge of keeping tabs on the cargo to ensure none of it has been damaged, stolen, or worse.
Thank you for reading the first edition of the Space Center Newsletter! If there is a topic you want to read about in an upcoming issue, feel free to message us on our Social Media pages or reach out over email. The current plan for next month’s Newsletter is a sneak peak at the upcoming mission, Stalemate!
So stay tuned and keep exploring the stars!
